A Safe Ride to School for Girls in Afghanistan

Help provide safe transportation to school for girls in Afghanistan.
Mirwais Mena School for Girls is located in a village by the same name just outside of Kandahar, in southern Afghanistan. It is the only school for more than five hundred Afghan girls. Most of the girls' parents are illiterate, and many of the girls have to travel several miles from surrounding villages to get to class.
In 2008, several girls attending the Mirwais Mena School were attacked by men with acid, a common tactic used by the Taliban, which opposes education for girls. Despite the danger, the school stayed open. Donations from New York Times readers helped purchase a bus and pay a driver's salary so the students could have secure rides to and from class. The same bus still serves the girls of Mirwais Mena School, but the cost of operating the vehicle is sometimes more than the families can afford.
You can help. Just $6 helps provide a month of rides to and from Mirwais Mena School for one brave Afghan girl. Your donation offers security to the students so they can focus on their enrichment and education.
Update from the Field
Last summer, after years of use, the school bus started breaking down. Without this program, many girls would be forced to drop out of school. Thankfully, due to an outpouring of support from GreaterGood donors, we were able to purchase a new bus.
"The bus is very useful for us. It removes our fears and the concerns of our parents. I am very happy seeing this good bus. I am grateful to GreaterGood for a wonderful donation" —Lailoma Anwar, 10th grade student at Mirwais Mena School for Girls.
