Artisan: HSSS

HSSS is a non-profit organization working for the uplift and development of underprivileged artisans in India. Composed Hindu and Muslim artisans who must contend with physical handicaps, illiteracy, extreme poverty, entrapment in lower castes, and limited trade and marketing skills, they face many barriers to accessing international trade. What they do have is a great deal of woodworking skill and a commitment to quality. It is the job of Handmade Expressions to help them find a fair global marketplace for their lovingly crafted treasures.

Environment matters to HSSS, so they only use Shesham wood from the forest quota given by the government of India (which sells the wood of dead trees). They care about the artisans who work with them as well, and have created numerous assistance groups, as well as organized exhibitions to promote their art to a worldwide market. This increase in visibility has had a direct impact on the lives of the artisans, helping to provide better lives for themselves and their communities.
