Safe Childbirth in Lesotho, Africa
Roll over image to zoom in
Women in the remote South African country of Lesotho need your help.
Pregnant women in Lesotho face a high sickness and mortality rate, and a strong prevalence of HIV. Accessing medical help is not easy. There aren't many doctors — approximately one for every 20,000 people — and the country is full of rough, mountainous terrain that makes travel difficult.
Partners In Health (PIH) is working to help women overcome these challenges. The first step is giving local midwives medical training so they can provide comprehensive services, including prenatal, delivery, and postnatal care, immunizations, reproductive health services, and HIV testing, counseling, and treatment.
In addition, PIH is also encouraging women to give birth at the clinic in the town of Bobete. The long journey over rough terrain can be near impossible for a woman in or close to labor, so PIH offers pregnant women the opportunity to arrive prior to delivery and stay in "Mothers' Houses," safe nearby locations provided by PIH. Skilled nurses and clinic facilities decrease the risks of maternal mortality, and babies with health issues get immediate professional medical attention.
Thank you. Your compassion directly helps mothers in need by funding this comprehensive PIH program.
Just $10 could heat a Mothers' House for a week, or provide a premature infant with time in an incubator for a day. $20 could provide postnatal supplies for a new mother and baby, including a warm hat and baby blanket. $55 is enough to pay for one day of special infant care in the neonatal unit. $250 is enough to pay for emergency obstetrics care to prevent mother or infant death during complex deliveries.
How can your donation help?
This program provides all of these services, and more, to the women and infants who need them most. The areas PIH works in are particularly vulnerable to fluctuations in the economy, so the costs may change over time — but these services remain a shining example of what PIH can and will accomplish with your kind gift, of any amount, for mothers in need.
About Partners In Health
Partners In Health (PIH) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation whose mission is to provide a preferential option for the poor in health care. Through service, training, advocacy, and research, and by establishing long-term relationships with sister organizations, PIH strives to achieve two overarching goals: to bring the benefits of modern medical science to those most in need of them and to serve as an antidote to despair.
"At its root, our mission is both medical and moral. It is based on solidarity, rather than charity alone.... Whatever it takes. Just as we would do if a member of our own family — or we ourselves — were ill."
