Amazon River Flooding - Help Now

Item # 49537

Thank you for your compassion during a time of great need in the Peruvian Amazon.

In early April, the Peruvian Amazon began to flood, reaching record heights. Tens thousands of people in the region have been displaced, or are living in flooded homes. Government aid has focused on Iquitos city and larger communities. But at least 400 remote jungle communities are also affected, and also need assistance.

Communities along the Tahuayo River were completely inundated; schools, farms, and clinics were all flooded along with people's homes. Families were actually living among the rafters or hanging hammocks from the roof, with the floodwaters lurking just beneath them. Others built rafts with tarp tents to live in next to their homes.

Your caring donation helps Angels of the Amazon (AOA) supply much-needed food, tarps, and blankets to those living in emergency situations. Just $5 can feed one family for a week! AOA reports that the blankets are especially appreciated by those who are wet and beginning to suffer from hypothermia. Once the emergency need is over, AOA will help these families rebuild.

Report from the Field
Angels of the Amazon
May 14, 2012

The water is now starting to quickly recede, about a foot a day. By the end of this week virtually all of the natives' homes should be above water. We will be doing two more food deliveries this week.

May 7, 2012

While the water has started to inch downward, communities of the Tahuayo River basin, as well as elsewhere in the western Amazon, are now enduring their sixth week underwater. Hunger and hypothermia remain a problem for the people. Angels of the Amazon continues deliveries of food, blankets, and plastic tarps to the people of the flooded communities.
