Silk scarf, 'Gujarat Wonder'

Item # 49008
No longer available
This scarf of silken magnificence honors the textile traditions of Gujarat. From Kala Raksha, the mustard yellow scarf is embroidered by hand in the Suf style, where the artisan counts – in reverse – the stitches on the scarf's woven surface according to weft and warp. These talented artisans work from memory and imagination, never a pre-sketched pattern. They finish the scarf with maroon, green and ivory tassels and glistening glass beads. Made in India.

Artisan: Kala Raksha

Artisan Kala Raksha The Kala Raksha nonprofit organization was founded in 1993, in Gujarat, to preserve and protect traditional Indian arts. The name 'Kala Raksha' translates as 'Safeguarding Art.' With the Rabari embroiderers, Kala Raksha is working to revive the traditional Rabari repertoire of delicate stitching techniques, which were quickly being replaced by more contemporary mirror and chain stitching designs.
