Teach a Woman in Darfur To Read & Write

Item # 45148

Women and children comprise approximately 80% of the displaced population encamped throughout Darfur and Eastern Chad. They have suffered loss of homes, livelihoods and possessions. As a matter of survival for themselves and their children, economic recovery is a primary concern of the displaced women. Farming has been their traditional livelihood, but they currently have no access to their lands. They have lost husbands and brothers who were income earners. Now they must support their surviving children and, in many cases, parents. Few opportunities to earn income exist in the camps.

Though many rural women are illiterate, they understand that education and skills training are vital to their future earning power.

Darfur Peace & Development Organization (DPDO) operates two Women's Centers: one in Kassab Camp and one in Abu Shouk Camp. Two teachers at each Women's Center provide two-hour literacy classes five days a week for six months to groups of 60 women. Daycare is provided for children of student mothers. Upon completion of the first level of the course, DPDO will introduce a second level of training which emphasizes reading comprehension, math, and business skills.

You can help. Just $30 gives a woman in Darfur the tools she needs to complete a six-month literacy training program, including school supplies, textbooks, and a literacy teacher.

Darfur Peace & Development Organization (DPDO) is a non-profit, non-sectarian NGO based in Washington, DC. with offices in El Fasher and Khartoum. DPDO's mission is to provide direct humanitarian relief to victims of the conflict in Darfur, to facilitate just governance and to enable Darfuris to rebuild their communities in effective, sustainable ways.
