Help save endangered baby penguins!

Hundreds of endangered penguin chicks in danger of starving need to be rushed to safety and care. Normally, penguin parents feed their chicks until they are large enough to molt their baby feathers and grow their adult, waterproof coat. However, many parent penguins have already begun their annual molt, and can't go back into the water to hunt until their new feathers are ready. Others have been forced to leave their chicks in search of food farther afield. The result is a shore full of starving penguin chicks.

The African penguin is in dramatic decline, and every single one of these baby penguins are crucial to the species. In just three generations, their population has declined an astonishing 60%, and the African penguin is now endangered. This is a unique opportunity for you to save these special babies, and in doing so, help save an entire species.

Just $10 helps a rescued penguin chick for 2 days, and just $33 provides the entire care one baby penguin needs for a full week! Your gift will help make sure one of the rescued penguin chicks is fed and treated for any injuries or ailments suffered. With your help, these young penguins will be cared for until they can be released back to their home colony and fend for themselves.

Report From The Field
from Neil Greenwood,
IFAW South Africa Campaigns Manager

Last October, Beakie, an African penguin was hit by a speeding vehicle. Left with a severely damaged beak, she underwent two months of rehabilitation and then was flown to Johannesburg to undergo reconstructive surgery. It was a great surprise when Beakie laid two perfect white eggs at her new home in Pretoria, just four months after arriving. Both she and partner Treasure shared incubation duties and very quickly became skilled nest builders. On the morning of June 6th, we welcomed Beakie and Treasure's first chick into the world! It has been quite a remarkable adventure for Beakie, considering all that she has been through. Beakie's story is a true testament to the resilience of the endangered African penguin.
