Children need toys to play with, to express themselves, and to love. The January 2010 earthquake took that away from Haitian children — and more, as many children also lost their parents and are now living in overcrowded orphanages or with relatives in squalid tent camps.

Now the cholera outbreak is affecting thousands of families across the country, and life for Haiti's children remains hard and bleak. Each day, children are rushed to hospitals because of dehydration from cholera. Abject poverty existed in Haiti's rural central plateau even before the earthquake, and as a result, many of those who do make it to hospitals arrive incredibly sick, with HIV, type I diabetes, malnutrition, or even with cancer. Few of these children come with toys or games with which to distract them from their misery.

Together we can bring a small joy to these beautiful children!

A Haitian artisan group that produces paintings, embroidered linens and clothes, dolls, and other handmade crafts recently created "He and She rag dolls" that have become popular among local children in the mountainous villages surrounding Cange. The Sant Art team saw that many children in area hospitals, as well as displaced children living in tent communities throughout Port Au Prince, did not have dolls or toys. So the team set out to produce their handmade dolls in bulk to be provided to every child being discharged from one of Partners In Health's hospitals or health clinics, as well as children who are seen at three clinics run by Partners In Health in the displaced persons' camps in and around Port Au Prince.

You can help. Purchase of this Gift That Gives More™ funds a handmade doll for a sick Haitian child or a Haitian child living in a tent camp.
