Artisan: Hariharananda Balashram School
This imaginative artwork is the creation of a class of 1st graders from Hariharananda Balashram, a residential school for homeless children in Orissa, India. Balashram ("school for children") provides a first-class education and safe living environment for hundreds of needy kids irrespective of caste, religion, or gender.
Balashram was founded in response to one of the worst natural disasters in India's history. A catastrophic cyclone killed tens of thousands in 1999 and displaced over three million children, leaving many orphaned, homeless, and hungry. Originally set up to provide shelter, Balashram developed into a school and opened its doors to new students in 2004. Since then, forty kindergarteners per year have enrolled to begin their twelve years of formal education. About half of the students are orphans, and the rest are from the poorest families in rural Orissa.
Balashram provides opportunities for students to receive education, health care, and best of all, hope for a brighter future. At Balashram, some of the poorest children in India receive education on par the wealthiest families. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of these cards goes back to the continuing work of Hariharananda Balashram.
