Artisan Tipicos Tallados

In a small Honduran town known as the "Valley of the Angels," woodcarver Pedro Edmundo Deras creates mahogany masterpieces inspired by the beauty of the world around him.

Granted a scholarship to learn his craft in 1980, Pedro began working his way out of the poverty that plagued his town of 13,000. He developed his natural talent, working for his brother for several years before opening his own workshop, Tipicos Tallados, in 1990. Inspired by the tiled rooftops and cobblestone streets of Valle de Angeles, he began carving traditional mahogany chests mirroring the town's Spanish colonial architecture.

Pedro's business acumen grew along with his carving skills, and he now employs five carvers full-time. He's generous with his time and expertise and has taught many others the trade. "There is plenty of tourism in Honduras, so there is plenty of work for all. I like teaching others so they can have the same opportunity that I have had," he says. With his work in high demand, Pedro's employees are paid fair wages and are able to stay close to their homes and families. And as artisan woodcarvers, they find their work rewarding in other ways. As one employee puts it, "I like when new buyers come, they always want something new and that helps us learn more, I learn from every customer. It also gives me peace of mind to see how happy they feel when they see their designs carved just the way they wanted."

Pedro and his staff now concentrate on creating lifelike depictions of the natural world, including the breathtaking floral-carved boxes available in our store. Tipicos Tallados is proud to use only Certified Honduran Mahogany Wood, plentiful in Honduras thanks to the support of several NGO sustainable forest projects.
