'The Fish, Tequila Lotto'

Item # 40554
In Stock

This fisherman is in for a big surprise: he's hooked a fish inside a tequila bottle. The composition is marked as card number 32 of Marina Pallares' exclusive interpretation of Mexico's lotería. It is a unique version of the classic bingo game featuring traditional images. The lotería made its appearance in the second half of the 18th century, and it is still a favorite at schools, fairs, carnivals and festivals. "I grew up in Jalisco, known for the production of tequila from agave plants, and as a child I used to play lotería all the time. These two facts inspired me to create the 'Tequila Lotto' series," confides Pallares, who credits the influence of Leopoldo Méndez and José Guadalupe Posada in her work. She masters aquafortis and aquatint etching techniques to create this eloquent composition.

Titled "El pescado" in Spanish. Made in Mexico.

"I think painting has always been my destiny, because throughout my life, certain unexplainable things keep happening that lure me to the path of the fine arts.

"I have exhibited my work individually and collectively in Jalisco, San José del Cabo and Hamburg, Germany.

"I define myself as an eternal seeker. I don't like labeling myself or my work, so as soon as someone else tries to place me in a category or classification, I rebel and I change. It's just that it's early in my career and it would be dangerous, professionally speaking, to label me already.

"I enjoy having the biggest array of instruments available to express myself. In other words, I adapt techniques according to the theme that I'm working on.

"Most of my themes revolve around people and ordinary activities such as drinking coffee, riding a bike or dancing. Although sometimes I can be more complicated and express my dreams, my feelings, and other personal issues."
