Sterling silver dangle earrings, 'Graceful Buds'

Item # 39783
In Stock

Ornate curves bend and twist to form works of classic elegance. Elaborated in sterling silver, these earrings offer a stylish complement for any occasion.

Ploy Intha has an unbreakable spirit, battling countless difficulties to fulfill her dream as a silversmith. Intha describes the intricate process, unique to each piece: "An alloy, made of silver, copper and charcoal is molten in the forge and poured into a terracotta container. Then the alloy is beaten on an anvil with various sizes of hammers into sheets, which are later cut into the desired shapes. Then the design is patiently carved with tiny tools and, once completed, the sheets are joined, soldered and finely polished. The silver is also beaten and stretched into long strings that are cut, shaped like hook and attached to the design. The pieces are then washed into a tamarind solution and into water, then dried, filed and polished."

92.5% silver and 7.5% copper (The charcoal is added to the molten alloy to prevent solid dross from forming when the mixture is poured out.) Made in Thailand.

"My name is Ploy Intha. Although silversmithing is my passion, I have not always been a silversmith. When I was very young, I worked as a food seller with my sister. It was a hard job that paid very little money. One day my sister took another job. I could not manage working alone, on account of my leg. I have polio. I moved to northern Thailand about that time, and began looking for a job. I discovered that Northern Thailand is the birthplace of so many interesting handicrafts. I particularly loved the exceptional silver designs."
