You can help someone walk again.
A few dollars' worth of metal and plastic can restore mobility and independence to amputees and others suffering from orthopedic disabilities.
The causes of limb loss and limb deformity are many, and terrible: war and its legacy of abandoned landmines, harsh working conditions, accidents, congenital conditions left untreated. No matter what the cause, the end result is the same: a loss of mobility and independence.
The disabled are often the poorest of the poor. Rehabilitation services are minimal and too expensive, especially in rural and remote areas. Unable to support themselves, amputees and other mobility-impaired children and adults often rely on handouts and are condemned to lives of immobility and neglect.
For those unable to walk, regaining mobility is a critical first step on the long road to recovery. With the gift of a prosthetic foot or leg, amputees can work and provide for their families. Children can go to school and develop much-needed friendships. Parents can care for their children and contribute to the enrichment of their community.
With the gift of a prosthetic arm or hand, disabled women can once more tend their gardens, pick up their babies, and participate in making crafts to help support their families.
You can help. Your donation through this Gift That Gives More™ goes directly toward helping the poor in the developing world regain what they have lost. Your donation could help fund corrective braces for a child born with clubfoot, prosthetic leg or arm components for amputees, orthopedic surgery, or even a complete prosthetic limb.
Update from the Field
Sahr Jumissa was born with bilateral clubfoot in a village an hour from the town of Kono, in the most remote district of Sierra Leone. Upon learning that his son was born with clubfoot, Sahr's father abandoned his family, leaving Sahr and his mother, Rebecca, to live with her mother and grandmother. Born at Koidu Government hospital, Rebecca was informed that there was treatment for her son's clubfoot available at the hospital. However, Rebecca was hesitant to have her son treated as many family members and community members encouraged her to bring her son to a traditional healer. Fortunately, the counselor from the clubfoot treatment clinic knew of Rebecca and her new born son. When they did not arrive at the clubfoot clinic for treatment, she went to Rebecca's village and searched for her door-to-door. With free treatment and funds for transportation, Rebecca visited the clinic once a week for 6 weeks with Sahr and watched her son's feet straighten! Now Sahr is wearing a shoe brace and attends clubfoot clinic once a month for follow up!
Mobility Outreach International, formerly Prosthetics Outreach Foundation, seeks to ensure that children and adults with limb loss or limb deformities in developing countries have access to high-quality orthopedic and physical rehabilitation services so that they can enjoy lifelong independence and mobility.
