"Thousands of candles can be lighted from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened."
~ Buddha

Help keep the flame of education alive by funding higher education for motivated, talented college students in Cambodia, Laos, and Burma.

Countries in Southeast Asia face many challenges, ranging from the economic and military to challenges in the areas of healthcare, the environment, women's rights, the legal system, and many more. While each nation works to define its own future, education is the necessary foundation, both for the futures of motivated young people and for the futures of entire nations.

Through donations and sponsorships, the nonprofit organization Journeys Within Our Community (JWOC) provides university scholarships to deserving students in Cambodia, Laos, and Burma. Each scholarship covers the full cost of tuition and textbooks. Students attend four-year universities where most study business, finance or English.

All scholarship students volunteer for JWOC five to ten hours a week, helping make the many other programs JWOC runs possible. The hope is that many of these students will become future local and national leaders and the idea of giving back will be something they embrace. The education the students get is not just at school. Through volunteering, they see the power they have to make positive change in their own communities.

You can help! This Gift That Gives More™ helps keep the flame of education alive by funding a scholarship for student in Cambodia, Laos, or Burma, profoundly affecting his or her life. Thank you!

  • Report from the Field
From a JWOC newsletter sent August 9, 2009: "We are proud to announce that this summer 17 students will be graduating from the Journeys Within Our Community (JWOC) Scholarship Program in Cambodia and Laos.

"These students have studied, volunteered and, yes, been an integral part of all of our programs. For them it is an opportunity to change their destiny.

"This is the great opportunity in my life because I didn't expect to have a chance to attend university as I have no financial support. No someone can help me, but JWOC." -- Vorng Vang, JWOC Scholarship Student graduating August 2009.

"Of course, having so many of our students graduating is bittersweet. Many of these students have been with us from the start of the program and have been an integral part of developing our projects. We are proud, though, to see how far they have come and how JWOC has impacted their lives.

"I never thought that a poor girl like me be able to help others who in the same condition or lower than me. But JWOC help me and give me the chance to help others, replace hopeless by hopeful..." -- Somaly Ing, scholarship student graduating August 2009

"With so many students graduating, we are now looking to the next JWOC class. From August 1 through September 30 we will be raising money for a new class of JWOC scholarship students in Laos and Cambodia. We have a goal of 21 new students to start University in the fall under the JWOC Scholarship Program, joining the 48 students continuing with their education.

"Please help us as we continue to offer this chance to students who deserve an opportunity to live a dream they never envisioned possible. Donate today to help us reach our goal of 21 new students!"

    All the best,
    Andrea and the JWOC Team
