Help an Afghan Woman Learn Embroidery

Help a woman in the refugee camps of Afghanistan support herself by learning the craft of embroidery.
Although the Taliban government of Mullah Omar has been ousted from control of Afghanistan, the country is by no means peaceful. Violence and displacement have practically been institutionalized over the past 30 years of conflict, contributing to a sad preponderance of women and children living in makeshift refugee camps.
One of the few ways these women can improve their lives and the lives of their families is by learning a craft, but carpet-making -- Afghanistan's most famous craft -- can require a large loom, and middlemen can keep most of the profits. In contrast, small-scale embroidery has less of a start-up cost, can travel easily with the women, and passes more of the profits through directly to the artisan herself. Through earning an income of her own, a woman can provide education for her children, afford food and medicine, and help establish her family's future.
You can help. This Gift That Gives More™ provides embroidery supplies, three visits from a teacher, and a practice wage to allow a woman to learn embroidery and provide herself with a source of income. All finished embroidery is paid for in cash, and new supplies are provided, enabling a woman to transform her life as she transforms herself. Over 1,000 women in the camps and rural villages of eastern Afghanistan have been enrolled in training since January 2008.
