Goal: 30,000 Progress: 4,353
Sponsored by: The Hunger Site

Trump's campaign message was "Make America great again," and most people thought he was referring to the country as a whole. But now that he's in office, it is becoming more obvious that was not his intention at all.

Instead of putting more money into essential domestic programs (Environmental Protection Agency, education, job training, National Institutes of Health, Meals on Wheels), Trump wants to increase the defense budget for the military by $52.3 billion at the expense of vital domestic programs.

In the America under this myopic budget, children at home will potentially have their educational programming taken away via PBS funding cuts, local communities could have toxic sites remain uncleaned thanks to the massive EPA cuts, and people will be much worse-off with significant cuts coming to the NIH which provide essential health-related research.

In 2015, 13.1 million children lived in food insecure households, while 13 percent of all American households were considered food insecure. Just imagine what almost $53 billion could do for hungry children and families.

The U.S. already spends obscene amounts of money on its defense program. In 2015, the country had a declared military and defense budget of $601 billion. Why should the military have more money when it could be spent on feeding U.S. citizens and giving our children a better education? If Trump truly wanted to "Make America great again," he would know that requires reinvesting in America and its citizens!

Trump needs to stop dwelling on the past and thinking a higher-funded military will somehow be the answer to all of our domestic problems.

The U.S. cannot continue to spending money overseas when people are home are hungry and need better education. Sign to show your support for prioritizing domestic enrichment over war, poverty, and death!

Dear President Trump,

You said you wanted to "make America great again," but your new budget plan is actually taking money away from domestic programs that people rely on and you are giving that money to the military instead.

Right now, our military is already spending more than the rest of the world by a massive margin. Is it really that important to keep pushing money into something that already has so much when people at home are suffering?

If you continue with this budget plan, not only will you be making America much less great, but you will be hurting millions of people by taking away programs that so many of your citizens need to help them survive.

You said you wanted to create jobs, help our country, and make it better. In order to do that, you need to be putting money back into infrastructure, helping to combat the extreme poverty that exists, and actually creating new well-paying jobs.

The defense budget does not need to be increased. The domestic budget does. People at home need the help of their leader and it’s your job to follow through.
