Too often kids living in poverty get left behind. Unfortunately, the new tax reform bill introduced in the House of Representatives is no exception.
The tax reform bill does nothing to help families pay for high-quality child care. Tax reform should expand opportunities for Americas children by increasing the child care tax credit.
Help more kids have a chance to succeed. Urge Congress to expand the child care tax credit today!
I'm writing to urge you to support an expansion of the Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit (CDCTC), including making it fully refundable, in tax reform legislation.
Helping parents afford quality early childhood education as part of a childcare package is an investment in their future. It builds essential skills in young children that have significant, beneficial short- and long-term effects on their education, health, social behavior and lifetime employment and income.
The tax bill does include an expansion of the Child Tax Credit (CTC), but it leaves out 16 million kids living in poverty because its not refundable. Additionally, 80% of tax refunds are spent on items other than child care, such as paying down debt or putting into savings, and not on ensuring kids have access to high-quality child care. If Congress really wants to invest in our country, it must invest in our children.
I encourage you to be a champion for our nations children, particularly those living in poverty. Please work to include an expansion of the CDCTC in tax reform, similar to the bipartisan, bicameral Promoting Affordable Childcare for Everyone Act (S. 208 | H.R. 3632).
I look forward to your response.
