Goal: 20,000 Progress: 9,600
Sponsored by: U.S. Fund for UNICEF

Experts believe that we have the knowledge and technology to end preventable child deaths in a generation. Specifically, that means hitting "20 by 2035": reducing the under-five child mortality rate to 20 or fewer child deaths per 1,000 live births in every country and community by 2035.

To make it happen, the world needs to "bend the curve" and accelerate global progress in cutting child deaths, especially for the most vulnerable populations.

At a forum last June, representatives from governments, civil society organizations, and faith-based organizations joined a pledge to help reach that incredible goal. On behalf of the U.S. Government, Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius signed the pledge.

President Obama noted his commitment to end preventable child deaths last year. We need you to remind him of that commitment. Show him that Americans expect him to make good on his pledge by investing NOW in programs that lead to ZERO children denied the chance to lead a healthy, productive life.

Join us, in urging the President to back up his promises with the resources needed to achieve them.

Ending preventable child deaths

Dear Mr. President,

I am asking you to act on the commitment the United States made last year to help wipe out preventable deaths of children under the age of five within a generation. The United States and over 175 countries have signed the "Committing to Child Survival: A Promise Renewed" Pledge to help every country in the world reach a child mortality rate of 20 deaths or fewer per 1,000 live births by the year 2035.

American-led resources and innovations already helped to cut those deaths by 40% since 1990. Health experts confirm we definitely can get to the 2035 goal, but we need your leadership and your commitment of the necessary funding.

As you plan your Budget Request to Congress for Fiscal Year 2015, we encourage you to increase funding for the programs and organizations that directly impact global child survival, especially USAID's maternal and child health account and the U.S. contribution to UNICEF.

We committed to thinking big when we signed the Pledge last year. Now we need a bold budget from you to make it happen.

Thank you for joining us in our relentless fight for child survival.
