UN to investigate source of cholera outbreak in Haiti

The United Nations is now calling for a global investigation into the cause of the cholera outbreak in Haiti after riots began to affect the peacemaking camps of those suspected to have started it.

According to Bloomberg News, some existing research links the epidemic to Nepalese soldiers that were part of a U.N. peacekeeping force, leading others to target their fury at the base where they are stationed. U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said independent tests that the U.N. ran on the soldiers have so far been negative.

Ban Ki-moon and the World Health Organization (WHO) are in talks to commission a group of experts to run the independent investigation, reports the news source.

"We are in discussions with [the WHO] to find the best experts to be in a panel to be completely independent," U.N. peacekeeping chief Alain LeRoy said.

A team of water, sanitation and hygiene experts were also deployed by the U.N. recently to evaluate and "redouble [their] efforts" to make sure the best health and sanitation standards are upheld, LeRoy said, according to the Washington Post.
