Tanzania steps up to help suffering Somalians

African countries are coming together to aid those suffering from prolonged famine and droughts in Somalia by providing food for their neighboring countries, IRIN reports.

Tanzanian president Jakaya Kikwete recently announced that the country would be donating about 661,380 pounds of maize to combat food insecurity in Somalia.

"We are deeply concerned with reports of severe famine in the Horn of Africa, where Somalia is hardest hit," Kikwete told the news outlet.

"We wish we could have given you more because we understand the magnitude of the problem and your needs. At present that is what we can manage since the harvesting season has just started. We are going to look at the possibility of giving more food support in the future."

Aside from this generous donation, Kikwete also confirmed that he would lead a campaign to promote others within his country and surrounding nations to give what they can to help out.

"We will ask various friendly countries, organizations and local firms engaged in bottling water to deliver relief supplies to Somalia," Kikwete said.
