Soil erosion is among the major environmental problems in southwest China, threatening the livelihood of millions of rural poor people. Water shortages were also a serious problem for the people living in the region.
By encouraging farmers to switch from corn to fruit trees, the World Bank was able to work with growers like Gong Daihua to stop soil erosion while producing a crop that is less work to maintain and more valuable on the market. The addition of a stable water supply and the construction of rural roads have markedly improved the prosperity of Minquan Village.
