Immediately following the devastating tsunami of 2004, Room To Read founder John Wood announced the organization's commitment to rebuilding efforts on the eastern coast of Sri Lanka. Since then, Room To Read has partnered with local volunteers and NGOs to provide materials, construction labor, and matching funds to re-build the Sri Lankan schools that were lost.
In tsunami-impacted areas, Room To Read found that one of their most important contributions was starting preschool programs that allowed young children, many of whom lost family and friends, to regain some sense of normalcy. The preschools also helped free up the time of parents, grandparents, and siblings for other work in the community.
Since 2005, Room To Read also has established libraries, developed new local language children's books, and funded long-term girls' scholarships to students who would not otherwise be able to attend school.
GreaterGood.org supports these efforts through the "Click Here To Give" program at The Literacy Site and Gifts That Give More [tm].
