Through the new $100,000 Shelter Challenge that began today, organizations can receive cash grants, vaccinations, or pet beds to help the pets in their care.
GreaterGood.org and the Petfinder Foundation will award $100,000 in cash grants; 5,100 vaccinations; and 3,825 pet beds for a total of 244 prizes to be awarded between August 12 and October 13. Funding for the grants is provided by The Animal Rescue Site with additional help from GreaterGood.org's corporate sponsors.
Groups have multiple ways to receive these awards including votes, recruits, and stories. More information can be found at www.ShelterChallenge.com.More on Pet Beds and Vaccinations
Due to shipping concerns, the non-monetary prizes are restricted to groups located in the United States.
Fifty-one groups (one in each state and one in Washington DC) can win vaccinations. The prize is 100 vaccinations per group. The winning groups can select 100 doses of one of the following vaccinations manufactured by Boehringer Ingelheim: Rabies, Bordetella, FVRCP or DHPP. These vaccinations have been determined to be what shelters and rescue groups most commonly need to help protect the pets in their care from communicable diseases found in a shelter/rescue environment.
A representative at the Petfinder Foundation will work with the group after they win to establish what type of vaccinations that they need for the animals in their care and arrange for delivery.
One hundred and two groups (two in each state and two in Washington DC) will receive pet beds like the ones shown here. Groups can win 25 to 50 beds per group. The Shelter Challenge pet beds are manufactured by the U.S. company Tory Road. They are made from Unreal Lambskin (registered trademark) - a synthetic sheepskin available only from Tory Road.
This Unreal Lambskin 20" x 30" pet bed is soft, practical, and extremely durable, too. The unique lock-stitch backing makes the pet bed tough (if not virtually impossible) to unravel. The plush pile allows air to circulate underneath so pets stay cool in the summer and warm in winter. Shelters and rescue groups like them too because the beds are machine washable and dryer safe.
As with the vaccinations, the delivery of the pet beds will be coordinated by the Petfinder Foundation. It will be up to winners to respond to the Foundation's emails and give them a current delivery address.
Since 2008, the Challenge has given more than $1.3 million in cash grants to shelters and rescue groups of all sizes. Vaccinations and pet beds were added in 2013 to allow GreaterGood.org to help even more groups.
Winners from the first Shelter Challenge of 2013 are listed here.
If an organization declines a prize, GreaterGood.org and Petfinder Foundation will determine another suitable beneficiary.
