Major League Soccer team Portland Timbers partnered with Mercy Corps to promote the International Day of Peace on September 21. A special auction of players' jerseys benefitted Mercy Corps sports programs around the world.
In Mercy Corps' twenty-nine sports-related projects in twenty countries, team sports have helped children overcome health challenges (specifically HIV/AIDS), deal with the trauma related to natural disasters, learn peaceful ways of conflict management, and develop life skills to help them in school and jobs.
These sports programs also help empower marginalized groups of children, especially minorities, girls, refugees, and children with disabilities.
To celebrate the 2011 International Day of Peace, Mercy Corps organized soccer games in Haiti, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, India, Iraq, Kenya, and Pakistan.
