GreaterGood grants made possible by online activities at The Breast Cancer Site were awarded in February and March for two major programs.
More than $185,000 went to National Breast Cancer Foundation in February to pay for free mammograms for women in need, said Elizabeth Baker, executive director of GreaterGood.org. This program has enjoyed GreaterGood support since 2002, providing thousands of free mammogram exams for women who cannot afford this procedure.
An additional grant of $50,000 in March went to the University of Michigan for breast cancer research. This grant will help support the work of the research work of Catherine Van Poznak, M.D, to reduce the spread of breast cancer (metastasis) to the bone.
Dr. Van Poznak is an Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine in the Breast Oncology Program at the UM Comprehensive Cancer Center. She is a world-recognized expert in issues related to spread of breast cancer to bone, and related to the adverse effects of cancer treatment on bone. Her work on understanding tumor cell dormancy and emergence from dormancy will help define new pathways for anticancer therapies to target.
