Gender pay inequality occurs routinely in nonprofits

A new survey by The Chronicle of Philanthropy found that even for entry level jobs in nonprofits or philanthropic organizations, men typically outearned women. Approximately 26 percent of men entering work at a nonprofit earned at least $50,000, compared with 15 percent of women.

The survey conducted by The Chronicle of Philanthropy, Nonprofit Leadership Alliance, and Young Nonprofit Professionals Network also found that women had much lower expectations for what they would earn in their next job.

The gap mirrors overall statistics collected by 2010 Census and Bureau of Labor. The US Census report concluded that "on average, full-time working women earned 77 cents to every dollar earned by men for equivalent work."

 


Take Action

In June, the Senate failed to pass The Paycheck Fairness Act (S.797, H.R.1519). Supporters decried Senate shennigans as the legislation was essentially tabled without a full debate on the floor.  To learn more, visit The Hunger Site's Take Action Center.

One of the disappointed sponsors of the bill, Senator Mikulski calls for women to "suit up" and continue the fight against wage discrimination.
