Today, August 19, is World Humanitarian Day where the international community honors humanitarian personnel and those who have lost their lives working for humanitarian causes. It was designated in 2009 by the United Nations General Assembly to coincide with the anniversary of the 2003 bombing of the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad, Iraq. Since its creation, it has sought to bring public attention to the bravery and sacrifices of those working to relieve the suffering of victims of humanitarian crises.
This year, the United Nations "The World Needs More…" campaign is designed to harness the power of social media to bring about positive change.
